This will be my third time leading this particular trip and I will once again be partnering with local guides, Marcello and Raffaella, to offer you an unforgettably authentic and unique experience. The first trip I led to Umbria in October of 2014 was an “over-the-top” experience and the second trip in October of 2017 surprisingly surpassed my already high expectations. Each group bonded seamlessly and was energetically open to new experiences and adventures daily.

Umbria is one of Italy’s best kept secrets where local heritage and way of life seem to be frozen in time.  We will get off the beaten path.  We will make a connection with the land, its people and traditions via a carefully designed itinerary.

 Our home for 7 nights will be a private agriturismo in the countryside overlooking Assisi. We will meet on our yoga mat each day; connect with the energy of this sacred part of the world, allowing us to present our best selves to its people. Each day will be a new adventure including excursions to delve into its history and visit sites dating as far back at the Etruscan and Roman times. We will experience truffle hunting with a specially trained dog in the countryside. And the food- with a plethora of options for the gluten free or vegetarian traveler- with is memorable! We will enjoy authentic regional cuisine at private farms, on sight cooking classes, as well as a myriad of spectacular restaurants. Umbria is also home to the superb, and not exported, Sagrantino di Montefalco red wine and the, seldom exported, Grechetto white wine- necessitating a winery visit or two.

I have no doubt that working our intentions with our consistent attention and elevating our frequencies with our daily yoga practice cleared the path for such synchronicity of events each and every day of our journey together. We were a merry band of 10 adventurers last year and it was truly magical.

We found our villa down a one lane country road in Montefalco.   This was the beginning of our week long adventure. Mornings started with a yoga session (my first time) followed with a light breakfast of fresh fruit, yogurt, homemade jams on toast or muffins.

We went to a olive grove in Trevi and tasted the season’s first batch of olive oil freshly pressed that day. Oh my gosh- I can’t begin to describe the flavor. Please bring me a bottle back….

We hand a hands on lesson on how to make homemade pasta.  We rolled, shaped, stuffed, and cooked our pasta for our evening meal. It was like eating pillows- very delicate.

The country was so beautiful to see as we travelled to the small towns on mountain tops where we experienced open air markets, learned about their culture and how they lived hundreds of years ago walking down the same cobblestone roads. We experienced the cave where St. Francis prayed at his nature retreat. We explored an underground Etruscan city and strolled across a Roman bridge.

Have I mentioned the wonderful, delicious food and wine -bene, bene.  We were treated very special at each restaurant.  The table-side made dessert was a highlight as well as the pizza in Foligno. Let me say it was the best pizza I have ever had. It is still true to this day. Hope you get to try it.   Winery tours, local wines at every dinner, our own private chef and the wonderful dinner prepared for us at our villa, monks, gelato, pastries…….

My wife and I joined Janice on her first Italian “Yoga and Food” trip in November 2014.  The trip was incredible. Janice joined forces with a local guide and his daughter about 2 hours train ride from the beautiful city of Florence, Italy. 

We loved the relaxed and local approach that let us sleep in, enjoy a daily yoga session, experience Italy and eat great food.  I will never forget the bucolic scenery, our morning truffle hunting and then the farm house feast of fresh truffles for lunch!

Janice is a great host and she’s partnered with an excellent local guide.  If you enjoy great food and wine, love to immerse yourself in local culture and want to do some yoga — this trip is for you!

Arrival, wine aperitif and welcome dinner

Meet at Foligno train station. Private transfer to your charming agriturismo in the countryside of Bevagna. If arriving early, we will walk in the historic center of the little, charming town of Bevagna and enjoy a wine aperitif in the beautiful medieval piazza. Welcome dinner is at an amazing trattoria in the countryside where we will be introduced to traditional, local, cuisine.

Sunday, October 28

Wine tasting, Montefalco, EVO tasting, Trevi

After our morning yoga class, we will visit the famous Arnaldo Caprai Winery and taste their Sagrantino wine, considered one of the best red wines of Italy. Lunch will be at a distinctive restaurant in the piazza of Montefalco, a charming little town, called the “Terrace of Umbria” for its magnificent and gorgeous views, where the famous “Sagrantino di Montefalco” wine is produced. We will visit a family-owned mill with a 200-year tradition of olive oil making and taste their award-winning Umbrian DOP extra-virgin oil. Artisans use a blend of local, hand-harvested olives to create a vibrant, emerald-green oil that combines a delicate fruity flavor with a fresh, peppery finish. Olives are crushed and pressed within a few hours of harvesting.

In the late afternoon we will drive to the pretty hill town of Trevi, known for its’ black celery, for a walkabout. Dinner will be at a family owned restaurant with a warmhearted atmosphere.

Monday, October 29

Truffle hunting with the truffle dog, truffle producer shop, Bevagna

After Yoga we will journey to the mountains via a panoramic route to visit an Italian farming family at their home. Admire the glorious valley and mountain views and feel on top of the world- an unforgettable experience! Hike the hills on a truffle hunting adventure with the truffle hunter and his truffle scent dog. Partake in a truly memorable lunch with this gregarious family at their farm. Visit a truffle and mushroom producer shop that showcases products made with fresh truffles suitable for international travel. Back to the agriturismo. Dinner in Bevagna at a very cozy osteria with great food.

Tuesday, October 30

Civita di Bagnoregio, Orvieto, Healing Gong Meditation

Early morning departure and pictorial drive through the Umbrian countryside to Civita di Bagnoregio, a charming medieval town built on volcanic tufa that is slowly crumbling away and is only reachable by foot across a long bridge. Next we will visit nearby Orvieto, another beautiful Umbrian town. Lunch on your own, choosing from several lovely little places in the town center with ample time to explore the Duomo. The unique façade of the Duomo will surprise you! It is considered a masterpiece of Gothic architecture for its extraordinary beauty. Free time to visit several artisan shops, for ceramic, fabrics, leather goods, paintings… we will return to our agriturismo where you will be treated to a Healing Gong Meditation. Enjoy a dinner prepared by a local cook at the agriturismo.

Assisi, Eremo, Santa Maria Degli Angeli, wine tasting, cooking class

Yoga class. Early morning visit to Eremo, St Francis’ nature retreat and the other beautiful spots in this mystic place at the top of Assisi. At the Basilica di Santa Chiara, we experience the original cross from San Damiano that God spoke thru to command St Francis to “Rebuild My Church”. Expand your knowledge with a private tour by a local, English speaking guide inside the Basilica of Saint Francis in Assisi. Admire the frescoes by the famous Italian painter Giotto. Enjoy a surprise and a light lunch at a beautiful winery in the countryside of Assisi. Savor tasting the bountiful wines on offer at this organic, sustainable winery/farm.

Stopping at Santa Maria degli Angeli to experience St. Francis’ church within a Cathedral. Back to the agriturismo for a cooking class and dinner.

Thursday, November 1

Perugia, ceramic laboratory in Deruta

Yoga class. Perugia is an enchanting hilltop city with a compact historic center that is a rambling maze of medieval streets. Learn about the Etruscan and Roman monuments, various architectural styles, and historical lore from an English-speaking guide. Perugia is also famous for “Perugina” chocolate, especially the little chocolates called “Baci” – Kisses. Free time to shop and to have a light lunch on your own at one of the many little bars, osterias, or cafes. On way back to agriturismo, we stop in Deruta, a little “borgo” that is world famous for its’ ceramic pottery. Luca, the owner, will take us on a tour and demonstrate the process to make and decorate the pottery. Dinner in Montefalco or Poreta.

Friday, November 2

Foligno, pizza, Spoleto, cooking class and farewell dinner

Yoga class. Visit Foligno and stroll through the city center enjoying the 13th century town hall and cathedral. Time for shopping at the many chic boutiques. Pizza lunch at the best pizzeria in Foligno. Then we travel to Spoleto, another beautiful hilltop town, renowned in Italy and all over the world for its’ Music Festival in July. We’ll explore the town’s magnificent sites – the Duomo, the narrow roads, the castle, and the roman bridge before arriving at a fabulous restaurant for our cooking class and with the creative chef /owner. Farewell dinner to follow.
